Consumer healthcare software is not ordinary e-commerce. Patients booking a private MRI or CT scan are often anxious and time-pressured, while providers must protect sensitive health data under UK GDPR.
We built Skannr, a UK platform for finding, comparing and booking private MRI, CT, X-ray and ultrasound scans. These are the lessons that matter for anyone building a healthcare booking product.
1. Remove friction from an anxious journey
Patients want three answers quickly:
- Is the scan I need available near me?
- What is the full price?
- How soon can I be seen?
Structuring search around scan type, body area and location — with clear pricing and availability — lets patients compare without wading through jargon.
2. Referrals are part of the product
Many scans, especially those using ionising radiation such as CT and X-ray, require a clinical referral and justification under IR(ME)R. A platform cannot simply take payment and confirm. It needs to:
- Accept referral letters securely.
- Offer a referral route for patients who do not have one.
- Let the clinic review the request before the appointment.
3. Health data is special category data
Under UK GDPR, health information needs extra protection:
- Encryption in transit and at rest.
- Role-based access separating patients, clinic staff and administrators.
- Audit logs recording who viewed or changed records.
- Clear data residency agreed with providers and documented.
4. Integrate with the clinic's systems
If receptionists retype online bookings into their own systems, the platform has only moved the work. Bookings, patient details and payments should flow into clinic workflows automatically wherever their systems allow.
Summary
Good healthcare software pairs a calm, simple patient experience with rigorous engineering underneath. We have applied the same approach to care management with Smart CarePlanner.
